The Risk of Workplace Surveillance

Neurotechnology and advanced behavioral analytics may provide information about processes occurring behind those outcomes. That distinction matters. An employee may produce excellent work while experiencing stress, distraction, fatigue, or other internal states. Should an organization have access to those states simply because technology makes them measurable? The fact that something can be measured does not automatically mean it should be measured. Companies should collect only information that is reasonably necessary for a legitimate purpose. More data is not automatically better data.
3. Protect Sensitive Information
Neural, biometric, behavioral, and psychological information should receive strong security protections. Access should be limited according to legitimate organizational needs.
4. Establish Clear Governance
Organizations should identify who is responsible for approving, monitoring, and auditing neurotechnology and related data practices. Ethical review should not be an afterthought.
5. Assess Potential Harms
Before deploying a technology, organizations should consider not only its intended benefits but also possible unintended consequences. Employees, customers, legal experts, ethicists, and technical specialists may all provide valuable perspectives.
6. Maintain Transparency
People should not be surprised to discover that highly personal information is being collected or analyzed. Clear communication helps establish trust and accountability.
7. Preserve Human Oversight
Technology should support human decision-making rather than automatically determining people's opportunities or treatment within an organization.
